What is Carbon Steel?

Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy, which contains up to 2.1 wt.% carbon. For carbon steels, there is no minimum specified content of other alloying elements, however, they often contain manganese. What Are The Types Of Carbon Steel?

Low-carbon steel

Low-carbon steel is the most widely used form of carbon steel. These steels usually have a carbon content of less than 0.25 wt.%. They cannot be hardened by heat treatment (to form martensite) so this is usually achieved by cold work.
Carbon steels are usually relatively soft and have low strength. They do, however, have high ductility, making them excellent for machining, welding, and low cost.
High-strength, low-alloy steels (HSLA) are also often classified as low-carbon steels, however, also contain other elements such as copper, nickel, vanadium, and molybdenum. Combined, these comprise up to 10 wt.% of the steel content. High-strength, low-alloy steels, as the name suggests, have higher strengths, which are achieved by heat treatment. They also retain ductility, making them easily formable and machinable. HSLA is more resistant to corrosion than plain low-carbon steels.

Medium-carbon steel

Medium-carbon steel has a carbon content of 0.25 – 0.60 wt.% and manganese content of 0.60 – 1.65 wt.%. The mechanical properties of this steel are improved via heat treatment involving austenitizing followed by quenching and tempering, giving them a martensitic microstructure.
Heat treatment can only be performed on very thin sections, however, additional alloying elements, such as chromium, molybdenum, and nickel, can be added to improve the steel's ability to be heat-treated and, thus, hardened.
Hardened medium-carbon steels have greater strength than low-carbon steels, however, this comes at the expense of ductility and toughness.

High-carbon steel

High-carbon steel has a carbon content of 0.60– 1.25 wt.% and manganese content of 0.30 – 0.90 wt.%. It has the highest hardness and toughness of carbon steel and the lowest ductility. High-carbon steels are very wear-resistant as a result of the fact that they are almost always hardened and tempered.

    What Are The Types Of Carbon Steel Pipe Fittings?

  • Carbon Steel Elbow – It is a carbon steel pipe fitting that is installed between two lengths of pipe or tube allowing a change of direction, usually 90 degrees or 45 degrees.
  • Carbon Steel Tee – A carbon steel tee is used to either combine or split a fluid flow. Most common are equal tees which have the same body and branch diameter but there is also a wide range of reducing tees where either the branch or the body is of a different diameter relative to each other.
  • Carbon Steel Cross – A carbon steel cross has one inlet and three outlets, or vice versa and like tees come in equal and reducing forms. A cross is more expensive than two tees but has the advantage of reduced space and requires less labor to install.
  • Carbon Steel Reducer – Carbon Steel Reducers are used to join two different pipe sizes together. They can be either concentric or eccentric which refers to the relative position of the center lines of the outlet and inlet. Special attention must be given when using reducers in a horizontal orientation as the slope prevents free draining of a system if not installed correctly.
  • Carbon Steel Cap or plug – It is a type of carbon steel pipe fitting which is liquid or gas-tight, and is used to cover the end of a pipe. A carbon steel end caps has a similar function to a plug. For screwed systems, the carbon steel end caps is having female threads where a plug is having male threads.
  • Carbon Steel Coupling – A carbon steel coupling connects two pipes to each other. If the size of the pipe is not the same, the fitting may be called a reducing coupling or reducer, or an adapter. By convention, the term ‘expander’ is not generally used for a coupling that increases pipe size; instead, the term ‘reducer’ is used.
  • Carbon Steel Union – A carbon steel union is similar to a coupling except that it is designed to allow quick and convenient disconnection of pipes for maintenance or fixture replacement.
  • Carbon Steel Nipple – A carbon steel short stub of pipe usually of threaded steel, brass, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, or copper; occasionally just bare copper. A nipple is defined as being a short stub of the pipe that has external male pipe threads at each end, for connecting two other fittings. Carbon steel nipples are commonly used for hoses.
